Why the Same Free Game Shows Up on Fifty Different Sites

A single HTML5 game often lives on dozens of unrelated portals at once. The reason is a licensing model most players never think about.

Play enough browser games and the pattern eventually jumps out: the same match-3 puzzle, the same physics-based archery game, the same bubble shooter, sitting on portal after portal under slightly different names and slightly different framing, sometimes with the developer's own branding stripped off entirely. This is not plagiarism in the usual sense, and it is not a coincidence. It is the normal, intended outcome of how a large share of casual HTML5 games actually get distributed — not sold to one storefront, but licensed out to dozens of sites simultaneously.

The Syndication Model, Explained

A studio that builds a casual HTML5 game rarely plans to sell it once. Instead, many go through a distributor that packages finished games and licenses them out to portal operators for a flat fee, a revenue share on the ads shown around the game, or sometimes nothing at all beyond the exposure. The portal embeds the game, usually as an iframe pointing at assets hosted elsewhere, and displays it as part of its own catalog. The same underlying build can end up embedded on a hundred different domains this way, each one presenting it as simply one more title in their library, with no obligation to disclose that ninety-nine other sites are doing the exact same thing.

Why Studios Choose Volume Over Exclusivity

A single small HTML5 game rarely earns much on any one site. The ad revenue or licensing fee per portal is small, sometimes fractions of a cent per play. The economics only work at scale, which is exactly why a developer's incentive runs opposite to what a console or premium PC studio wants: instead of protecting exclusivity to preserve value, a casual browser game studio wants the widest possible distribution, because more portals showing the game means more aggregate plays and more aggregate revenue, even if each individual placement is worth very little on its own.

What Changes and What Stays the Same Across Copies

Because the underlying game file is usually identical across every site hosting it, the actual play experience does not change from portal to portal — the level design, the controls, and the difficulty curve are the developer's, not the host site's. What does change is framing: the title displayed, the thumbnail chosen, the surrounding recommendations, and how the portal categorizes it. Older portals like Kongregate and Cool Math Games built their identity partly around curation — deciding which of the many available games were worth featuring — which is one of the few things that genuinely differs between two sites hosting the same underlying title.

The Attribution Problem

A predictable side effect of wide syndication is that players often have no idea who actually made the game they just spent twenty minutes on. Developer credit sometimes survives inside a small logo in a corner of the game itself, but portal-level pages frequently omit it entirely, either through simple carelessness or because the licensing terms never required it. This creates a strange asymmetry: a game can be genuinely popular, played by huge numbers of people across many sites, while its actual creator remains almost anonymous to the audience enjoying their work, since no single site's traffic numbers reflect the game's true total reach.

Why This Differs From the Newgrounds Era

The earlier wave of browser gaming, built on Flash and hosted mainly on a handful of dedicated portals, worked differently — a game usually had one clear home, and reposting it elsewhere without permission was closer to genuine piracy than to licensed syndication. The Newgrounds model rewarded a single canonical destination with comments and a community attached to it. The modern licensing-driven syndication model trades that sense of a single home for reach, spreading the same game across the widest possible footprint of sites rather than concentrating attention anywhere in particular.

What It Means for a Player

None of this changes how a game plays, but it is worth knowing the next time a "new" game on one site looks suspiciously familiar from another visited months earlier — the déjà vu is usually accurate rather than imagined. It also explains why review scores and comment sections for the same game can look wildly different across two portals hosting an identical build: the audience, the surrounding context, and the site's own reputation shape how a game is received far more than anything about the game file itself, which in a very literal, byte-for-byte sense has not changed at all between the two copies.
